STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
The Portarlington Cemetery is located south west of the town on a hill and contains the graves of many district pioneering families. It is organized on Wesleyan/Methodist, Church of England, Roman Catholic and Presbyterian denominational sections with headstones dating from the 1850's. Some of the large ornamental groves of trees have commemorative significance.
The Portarlington Cemetery has scientific, historic and social values to the surrounding district.
The Portarlington Cemetery headstones and memorials are a source of genealogical information and examples of monumental mason craftsmanship. The size and decoration of the memorials indicating the status of the individual or the family and the location and layout of the Cemetery makes this an important cultural place.
It is of Local Significance.

Portarlington Cemetery - Physical Description 1
Description
The Portarlington Cemetery is located at some distance from the urban section of the town on a hill with a central roadway traversing the block from Smyth Street entrance. This entrance is marked with wooden gate posts topped with ornamental spheres. The cemetery plan see additional information has separate sections for each denomination with a diamond feature section at the top of the hill. There are several large ornamental trees and the paths are asphalt with curb and channeling.
The headstones represent many early pioneer families such as Calhoun, Widdicombe, Pywell and P.M.Brown. Several of the larger memorials hold prominent positions in the cemetery. The WesleyanMethodist and the Church of England sections hold the highest ground with the Roman Catholic and Presbyterian sections down the hill and near the gateway entrance.
