STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
St John's Anglican Church was designed in Victorian Gothic style by Melbourne architects Terry and Oakden and constructed in brick by local builders Treven and Gubby to opening 1883. The building has a high pitch slate gable roof, pointed arch windows, tall bellcote and north elevation entrance porch. Some post war changes were made.
St. John's Anglican Church has aesthetic, historic and social value to the Portarlington community.
St. John's Anglican Church is a relatively intact late Victoria Gothic styled building with a distinctive belfry designed by a leading Melbourne architectural firm. It is associated with the large Anglican population of the Portarlington area in the 1880s.
It is of LOCAL cultural significance.

St John's Anglican Church - Physical Description 1
This Victorian Gothic brick church was built c1883 on a large corner site by the Anglican Church community of Portarlington.
It has a high pitch gable roof running east-west, clad in slate, with plain barge boards on the gable ends, and a tall slate clad bellcote, with a spire and cross at the apex. The building features buttresses, the two on the east elevation being angled, and pointed arch motif windows with white painted window sills and buttress cappings.
The north elevation has two pairs of two light windows, and a slate roofed gable entrance porch with a pointed arch motif timber door, window, and plain bargeboards. To the north east is a newer extension in brown brick, with a corrugated metal clad gable roof.
The west elevation features a large three-light stained glass window, and plain timber bargeboards.
