Statement of Significance
B Listed - Regional Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
Simon Frederick Staughton, a pioneer settler in the Anakie district, established his pastoral run originally known as 'Exeter' c1850. In the early 1870's Staughton had erected a large single storey regular;ly coursed basalt homestead on his property and the called in 'Staughtonvale'. The homestead is eclectically styled incorporating Italianate motifs with earlier Colonial Georgian traditions. The delicate timber verandah is the most distinctive external entrancement. 'Staughtonvale' was the site of the sugar beet cultivation experiment of the period 1871-73 and the homestead may be contemporary with the sugar beet mill. The stone from the Mill has been incorporated in the 1905 additions to the homestead.
