ICIANZ CHEMICAL FACTORY & FERTILIZER WHARF - History
This site was first occupied in 1905 by the Mount Lyell Company which produced sulphuric acid. An Australian shortage of caustic soda required for soap manufacture during WWI led to the establishment of a caustic/chlorine fabrication plant. The individual wharf built to service the factory was replaced by a continuous line of wharves at Yarraville between the late 1870's and 1900, when the MHT took over responsibility for port berthing facilities (Barnard, 2003; 35).
The ICIANZ Chemical Factory subsequently took over the plant in 1936, and became involved in the production of matches, bleaching powder (for mustard gas attack prevention) to aid the wartime efforts. The factory also played a key role in the peacetime era, with the production of essential agricultural goods including insecticides (e.g. DDT), and stock dips (Footscray Council, 1960: np).
ICIANZ CHEMICAL FACTORY & FERTILIZER WHARF - Interpretation of Site
It was the only example of an extant wharf and associated facilities used for the fertiliser industry, and subsequent chemical products. Fertilisers were an important import and export business for the port and state. This is also one of the only extant sections of the Melbourne Harbour Trust's development of the Yarraville Wharves.
