Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The houses at 12-18 Helen Street, Northcote, constructed by 1891 for Richard Wallis.
How is it significant?
The houses at 12-18 Helen Street, Northcoteare of local historic and aesthetic significance to Darebin City.
Why is it significant?
It is historically significant (Criterion D) asan unusual compromise between a traditional inner -suburban row houses and middle-suburb, asymmetrically planned, double-fronted timber villa.
Although altered in detail the row is visually cohesive and contributes to the character of the street (Criterion E).

HOUSES - Physical Description 1
12-18 Helen Street comprises four block-fronted timber houses, with hipped roofs, originally clad with slate, cast iron verandahs and asymmetrically positioned bay windows. No 16 has been clad with brickwork and the roof tiled, whilst the roof of No 14 has been replaced with aluminium tiles. Number 14 has also been reclad in aluminium siding since the 1980s. Only No 18 and 12 have slat roofs and Nos 18 and 14 have cast-iron frieze work to the verandah. Remnants of timber picket dividing fences exist between Nos 12 and 14 and front picket fences have been reconstructed on 14 and 18. Other minor alterations have been made.
