Statement of Significance
NOTE: This property is also known as 2A Seaview Avenue Barwon Heads
B Listed - Regional Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The house at 39 Flinders Parade is aesthetically significant at a REGIONAL level. Although altered, this house still demonstrates original design qualities of the Edwardian style. These qualities include the interlocking gable roof forms, clad in galvanised corrugated iron, whereby two projecting gabled wings flank the building, with remnants of a major gable present in the centre (that has been altered into a second storey gable). Other intact qualities include the two brick corbelled painted and unpainted chimneys (the unpainted chimney has a terra cotta pot), timber framed bay windows which appear to have leadlighted highlights, flat roofed projecting verandah supported by worked timber posts with worked brackets and fretwork valance, flying gables shingling and worked timber elements. The substantial Norfolk pine trees contribute to the significance of the place.
The house at 39 Flinders Parade is historically significant at a REGIONAL level. It is associated with former owners, Dr and Mrs Grimwade, prominent figures in Geelong in medical and yachting circles. The house is also historically significant at a LOCAL level for its associations with the Barwon Heads Estate Company Limited subdivision of 30 March, 1891.
Overall, the house at 39 Flinders Paradeis of REGIONAL significance.

Residence - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION
The site at 39 Flinders Parade originally formed part of the Crown Grant first owned by Alexander Cameron McDonald from 28 January, 1865. On 13 May, 1870, this land was sold to John Middlemiss, but was possibly purchased by Frederick Challis, farmer, on 13 January, 1876. On 30 March, 1891, this block formed lots 22-23, Section 3, as part of the large subdivision carried out by the Barwon Heads Estate Company Limited. These allotments were sold to John Daniel, ironmonger, who had a weatherboard house built in 1891. Daniel also had a boat shed built on the foreshore in front of his property. With his death in 1905, the property was passed on to his son?, Arthur Frederick Daniel, also an ironmonger. He owned the house for about five years, before selling it to Dr A. Sheppard and Mrs Amy Gertrude Grimwade in 1911-12. The Grimwades carried out extensive alterations and additions to the house at this time. Dr Grimwade was a medical practitioner in Geelong, and he and his wife lived at "Keerie Kara" in Ryrie Street (the site of the present Geelong Private Hospital). At one time Dr Grimwade was commodore of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, while Mrs Grimwade 'had the unique distinction of being the only lady member of any yacht club in the Commonwealth in recognition of her services', for she also shared her husband's enthusiasm for yachting. The sale of this property in c.1931 resulted from Mrs Grimwade's passing (Dr Grimwade had died in the late 1920s). By 1989 it was owned by Banj Properties, and it was possibly at this time when the original middle single storey gable was removed and a second storey gable extension added.
