STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The St. Matthew's Kindergarten, 230 McKillop Street, East Geelong, has significance as a predominantly intact example of the Victorian Carpenter Gothic style, and for its associations with the St. Matthew's Anglican Church from 1889. Although relocated from its original site (at the corner of Fitzroy and Matthew Streets) and second location (western side of Normanby Street), the building has been restored and is in good condition. It is also a noteworthy example of the work of the Geelong architect, Joseph Watts.
The St. Matthew's Kindergarten at 230 McKillop Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. Although relocated from Bourke Crescent, the building demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian Carpenter Gothic style. These qualities include the simple, steeply-pitched gable roof form that traverses the site, together with the minor gable that projects to the north and the porch gable that projects towards the Normanby Street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, corrugated profile to the roof cladding, four round ventilation stacks, narrow eaves, pointed timber framed multi-paned windows (including the small windows in the porch gable), timber framed doorway on the south side of the projecting porch, and the different turned timber finials on the gable ends. The building is also significant for its visual connection to the other Church structures on the site, reflecting the architectural development of St. Matthew's Anglican Church ini the 19th and 20th centuries.
The St. Matthew's Kindergarten at 230 McKillop Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It has associations with St. Matthew's Anglican Church, having been built as the Church building at the corner of Fitzroy and Matthew (formerly Wall) Streets in 1889 to a design by the Geelong architect, Joseph Watts. In 1916, the building was relocated to the west side of Normanby Street and in the 1990s to its current site on the east side of Normanby Street (but addressed as 230 McKillop Street). The St. Matthew's Kindergarten has further associations with George F. Blecher, Mayor of Geelong from 1873 and 1875, and Member of Victorian Parliament between 1875 and 1886. He paid for half the costs associated with the construction of the original Church building. The St. Matthew's Kindergarten at 230 McKillop Street is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is recognised and valued by sections of the East Geelong community for religious reasons.
Overall, the St. Matthew's Kindergarten at 230 McKillop Street is of LOCAL significance.
