MADDINGLEY NO.2 COAL MINE - History
The Maddingley No 2 coal mine was begun in March 1948 about 1.5 miles south of the No 1 mine, commenced in 1944. Maddingley No 2 supplied coal principally to the APM operation at Fairfield in Melbourne, and its peak annual production occurred in 1954, at just over half a million tons. After 1967 production fell away, and APM took over operations in 1970. After 1989, operation by a new company took out only small quantities for local use.MADDINGLEY NO.2 COAL MINE - Interpretation of Site
The site is clearly one of large-scale open cut mining, but use as a waste dump has eroded its value as a strong visual site.
