Statement of Significance
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010
What is significant?
The c1880 school, c1887 verandah, the attached teacher's residence and the surrounding site to the title boundaries.
How is it significant?
The school and teacher's residence are historically, aesthetically and socially significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
Why is it significant?
The school and residence are historically and aesthetically significant as a rare and well preserved example of a combined school and teacher's residence in bushland environs, similar to its original setting (Criteria B & E). The school is historically and socially significant because it has served the local population, as a school and community centre, for many years and played an important part in the development of education in the district (Criteria A & G). It is historically significant for its illustration of the development of education in the district (the position of the current school, well west of the first school, is believed to illustrate a long-running division in the Christmas Hills community over the issue of the school's siting) (Criterion A).
