Statement of Significance
ELTHAM STUDY STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE:
This planting is at the same time typical and uncommon, featuring the very common use of Radiata Pine ('Pinus radiata') as a windbreak along the edge of the property but is most unusual for the planting of the Stone Pine ('Pinus pinea') at the commencement of this line.
REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE (with AHC criteria) (2001)
The stone pine is significant to the Nillumbik Shire:
- for its rarity at that maturity (Criterion B2);
- for its association with the Taylor family, pioneers in the area (Criterion H1).
The Monterey pine row (14) is significant to St Andrews:
- as evidence of orchard activity there early in the 19th century (Criterion A4);
- as a mature tree row prominent in the landscape (Criterion E1).

Stone pine and Monterey pine row (14) - Physical Description 1
ELTHAM STUDY DESCRIPTON:
All trees are of a similar size, approximately 15-18 metres tall and are planted alonq the front edge of the property. The 'Pinus pinea' is planted adjacent to the driveway entry to the property and the lines of trees extends eastwards from here. Trees all appear to be in good condition.
The stone pine is 18m high and near to the point 345741E, 5836213N.
REVISED OR EXTENDED DESCRIPTON:
'PINUS PINEA' From southern Europe and Turkey, this species can reach 80 ft(24 m)in the wild and hasa flattened crown atop a straight, though often leaning trunk with furrowed, reddish grey bark. The rigid, paired needles are 4-8 in (10-20 cm) long and bright green. The globe-shaped cones are shiny and brown; the edible seeds are known as pine nuts.
