Monterey pine row (7) and Monterey pine group (3) at Eltham Central Park - Physical Description 1
ELTHAM STUDY DESCRIPTON:
The line of trees cuts across the park and appears to be part of a longer, earlier line c broken by contemporary park features. The trees are in moderate condition and approximately 15 metres tall, forming an imposing landscape feature.
One tree of the row has been cut down since the study, leaving seven plus 3 similarly "aged trees in a minor group west of the pavilion at the north end of the reserve.
REVISED OR EXTENDED DESCRIPTON:
'PINUS RADIATA' Fast growing to over 100 ft (30 m), this pine from Californiais an important timber tree in other parts of the world, especially Australia and New Zealand. It grows best in well drained soil but does not tolerate extreme dry conditions or heat and can be toppled by strong wind. It has a pyramidal shape when young, becoming more columnar with age.
The deep green needles are 4-6 in (10-15 cm) long, and the' bark is greyish brown. The 4-6 in (10-15 cm) long cones are light brown. 'Aurea' is a golden-foliaged cultivar that displays its best colour in winter; it is smaller than the species but inclined to revert to green and grow normally {Botanica}.
