Statement of Significance
Farleigh was designed by prominent Melbourne Architect Charles Webb and erected as the Webb family residence in 1865.
This two storey ashlar sandstone residence is symmetrically arranged about a classical porch with balustraded balcony above and with a timber, double post single storey verandah. Prominent quoins, architraves, eaves and cornices define Webb's inimitable conservative classical style.
Farleigh is a most distinctive Webb design with important historical associations. Charles Webb was perhaps the most prolific and successful practitioner in Melbourne architectural circles in the nineteenth century and his own residence epitomises his conservative classical philosophy. The graceful proportions and studied details of this residence, a notable and characteristic Brighton villa, are examplary and complemented the adjacent villa Fairfield, a similar building also designed by Webb but now demolished.
Farleigh has been painted white and the once splendid grounds severely reduced by subdivision. The original bay window room at the rear has been extended to two storeys. The interior has not been inspected. The exterior fabric and verandah is essentially intact.
