Statement of Significance
Fairholme is a two storey, symmetrically arranged house built in 1873 to the design of architects Crouch and Wilson, for warehouseman James Copeland. Construction is in stuccoed brickwork, treated as ashlar masonry, with a slate roof. An originally single but now double storey verandah supported on Tuscan columns, with square corner piers, encircles three sides of the house and has a cast iron balustrade.
Fairholme is a rare surviving example of the large houses of its period. Designed in a restrained Italianate style, the house illustrates a much used formula of architects Crough and Wilson, uncommon in this area. The addition of the second storey to the verandah has altered the original design and is illustrative of an attempt at 'modernisation'. Fairholme is one of the earliest houses in the district and is unusual in having large grounds around it still.
Fairholme is essentially intact externally, although portions of the verandah have been infilled, and is in good condition. The interior has been largely altered, unsympathetically decorated and is in fair condition.
