Statement of Significance
Wirringulla, built and landscaped c.1922 to the design of notable architect Marcus Barlow, was of statewide cultural significance:
- architecturally, as the house was architect designed for the architect's own use and thus it is not only one of the relatively small number of near intact architect designed Californian Bungalows but is particularly evocative of this important architect's efforts to champion the form and lifestyle associated with the Californian Bungalow and whose practice was otherwise highly notable for its commercial content;
- historically, as the extensive national publicity given to the house and other Barlow bungalow designs in Australian Home Beautiful and Australian Homes greatly enhances the present understanding of these theories as applied to a surviving house and is a measure of the public impact of its design and the influences which proceeded from it at that time;
- for the considered arrangement of the ornamental, functional and recreational areas of the property to provide the most advantageous setting for the house;
- as a fine example of the natural garden style popular in Victoria; the retention of details such as stone walls and seats, a pool, paths and stepping stones, light stands, hedges, lawns, garden beds and specimen trees exemplify the period of the garden's creation; and
- for the high integrity of the houes, its interoir and its garden setting, as documented in the Australian Home Beautiful and Australian Homes articles; and
- for the property's contribution to the surrounding Bungalow-era Holyrood estate and its evocation of the middle classes who made Camberwell their home in the early decades of this century and set its architectural character as one of Australia's most prominent early twentieth century residential suburbs.
