Statement of Significance
Built in the late 1880's, the house retains many of the period's decorative features including elaborate iron lace and tesselated tiling on the verandah and kauri parquetry floors in side. original gas lighting fixtures remain in place although long out of use. the large grounds surrounding the house contain many outbuildings and also mature tree specimens which have associations with events and people who have been associated with the house.
The builder of ther house was a civil engineer who designed the Adelaide breakwater. When the latter was destroyed in a freak storm - the fortunes of the engineer also similarly came to grief. The house was owned for 53 years by the prominent Daly family. Mrs Daly senior had been the daughter of the Belgian Consul and after his death andthe death of her husband, Mrs Daly became the Consul for Belgium and Quitchambo became the consulate. The house became the scene of many well attended gatherings and parties.
