Statement of Significance
Beginning as a subdivision by the Southern Terminating Building Society, in 1891, the site of Nocklofty became Kenneth Munro's property in 1905.
Work commenced on the house in January of 1906, soon after Munro's retirement as an Engineer, but at the beginning of his career as a skilled woodcarver. Apprenticed to Mr Dunne, Munro developed his art, in the workshops constructed adjacent to Nocklofty stables, carving its richly decorative elements.
In particular his work can be seen in Californian Redwood bargeboards, depicting gum leaves and nuts, and the verandah is supported by terracotta columns and bases, cast at Cornwall Potteries in Brunswick, to Munro's design. Internally Munro has carved impressive jarrah overdoors and overmantels, with fauna and flora, such that each carved piece symbolises the use of the room. An eagle spreads his wings atop the overmantel of the dining room, whilst its overdoor is carved to depict grapes, and cockatoos perch on the master bedroom overdoor.
The house, as a whole, is a single-storied verandahed and bayed house. It has terracotta Marseilles-pattern tiles, ridging and chimney pieces. A belvedere, with a conical roof, surmounts the roof-line of a house which was influenced by northern European house design and wood carving traditions and the British Arts and Crafts movement, but which derives its name from Knocklofty in Tasmania, Munro's birthplace.
Munro died here in 1928. The classification includes the whole building.
