Statement of Significance
Friedensruh, Waldau Court, Doncaster, with outbuildings, is a homestead built in stages for pioneering orchardist J G Thiele. The wattle and daub section with detached kitchen (demolished) dates from 1853, the two living rooms with cast iron verandah the 1880's and the new kitchen 1892. The wattle and daub building, now stuccoed, comprises two rooms with an attic, and the roof was shingled originally. Local stone is used elsewhere.
Friedensruh, Waldau Court, Doncaster, is a pioneering homestead in the district and was the birthplace of the orchard industry of Doncaster, an industry that only disappeared in recent times. The house was owned by the Thiele family, the founders of the property, until recently. The buildings themselves are important examples of a pioneering homestead, successfully developed over a period of time. The first section is an early surviving example of vernacular construction techniques and the various outbuildings are of note.
Friedensruh, Waldau Court, Doncaster, is in good condition and is reasonably intact.
Of State significance.
