Statement of Significance
Stone House is a two storey house built, it is believed, in the early 1850's for Edward Langhorne, merchant and early resident of Williamstown. The house is symmetrical and is constructed of stone, stuccoed in 1861 and has a slate roof. A double storied verandah, now removed, faced the facade originally and the doors to the upper storey have been changed to windows. The timber wing is later (1900's).
Stone House is an early stone house of note as a typical dwelling of the era, for its part in the townscape of the historic City of Williamstown and for its historical associations with the Langhornes. The house has been altered and is in a decayed state, somewhat distracting from its interest. As 'The Strand', the house is believed to have given its name to the well-known street. Architecturally, the building is a Georgian derived design.
Stone House is in a deteriorated state and in fair condition only. The house has been extensively and unsympathetically altered.
