Statement of Significance
The bluestone and brick house was built about 1860 for John Thomas Smith. Smith was one of Victoria's oldest colonists and was Mayor of Melbourne seven times and also became a member of parliament. His house was the venue for much entertaining and hospitality - a feature which continued after the house was sold to Mr. A. Fenton, when it was transformed into reception rooms.
It is significant for its association with J.T. Smith one of the State's early and prominent colonists.
