Statement of Significance
The first permanent courthouse on the Mornington Peninsula, dating from 1860 and built by Vaughan & Co.and reflecting this early date in its primitive design, more reminiscent of a school. Group Classification 30.8.73 File Numbers 1970 Old Post Office 789 Esplanade & 1245 Lock-up 2 Main Street.
The court house is significant within the Mornington Peninsula as the oldest court building and oldest public building in the area. It retains its original form and coupled with its gaol and extensive reporting of trials in local newpapers, provides insight into how justice was meted out from the earliest township period.
