Statement of Significance
Rochester Terrace is a group of ten stucco rendered and ornately brick terraces erected in two stages in 1869 and 1879 as an investment for eminent Emerald Hill auctioneer, agent and speculator W P Buckhurst. The axially planned terrace, with dominant central block, flanking intermediate wings and strongly detailed end pavilions is by an unknown designer and in the style of the classic revival.
Rochester Terrace facing onto the park environment of St Vincent Placeand reminiscent of the great London terraces of the nineteenth century is unique as the finest and largest classic revival terrace development in Victoria. The building is witness to the calibre of Buckhurst's entrepreneurial activities and has interesting historical associations through the many eminent tenants including booksellers Samuel Mullen and George Robertson.
Rochester Terrace maintained in excellent, near original external condition and sympathetically altered internally, is intact and an outstanding example of the terrace house typology in Victoria.
