Statement of Significance
The former Shire of Blackburn & Mitcham Municipal Offices, designd by architect R M King, and opened in December 1928 is architecturally and historically significant at the Local level. Architecturally, it is a refined and interesting example of the Georgian/Mediterranean Revival. The formal arrangement, the double-height arched window elements, and the Ionic portico lend an air of authority, while the tiled hip roof, with bracketed eaves provide a domestic and rustic Italian influence. Historically, it is important as the seat of the municipal authority of the Shire of Blackburn & Mitcham (renamed the City of Nunawading in 1945) for 45 years. The Municipal Offices were superceded in 1963, when new Council Offices were constructed. The former Shire Offices is a landmark on Whitehorse Road, and is one of the few buildings in the municipality with civic qualities and history.
