Statement of Significance
Constructed in 1888 and closed in 1925, this former cable tram engine house was occupied by the Capitol Bakery after extensive remodelling in 1936 in the Jazz Moderne style, believed to be from the designs of Harry Norris. The adjacent tram shed, the engine house and car shed although much altered, have significance as a surviving part of Melbourne's former cable tram network, the the only relic of the Toorak line, and for its later associations with the Capitol Bakery from the 1930s. It forms an important landmark on the Toorak Road/Chapel Street intersection.
