Statement of Significance
What is significant? The Woori Yallock Bridge over the Yarra River was constructed by the Country Roads Board in 1926, as the main bridge of a series of four crossing the river and floodplain. It was funded under the Commonwealth Developmental roads programme, to open up the area for agricultural development. The Woori Yallock Bridge was designed by T.H. Upton and D.V. Darwin. Now altered, Woori Yallock Bridge is a through-type timber Allen truss bridge supported on concrete piers, with round log stringer approach spans and timber abutments. In 1978 the truss was replaced with steel girders, and in 1988 the timber deck was replaced with a steel and concrete deck.
The bridge was in use until around 2002.
How is it significant? The Woori Yallock Bridge is significant for historic, technical, social and aesthetic reasons at the regional level.
Why is it significant? The Woori Yallock Bridge is of historical significance at regional level. For many years all new bridges built over the Yarra River were built using the latest adopted methods, as a show piece for the decision makers of the day. The Woori Yallock Bridge constitutes rare, possibly unique, evidence of a standard CRB 60 ft span timber truss bridge with concrete piers, round log timber beam approach spans, and timber abutments.
The Woori Yallock Bridge is of historical significance for its association with engineers T.H. Upton and D.V. Darwin, who went on to head up the NSW Main Roads Board and the Victorian CRB respectively.
The Woori Yallock Bridge is of technical significance as the earliest known through-type timber truss bridge, supported on concrete piers, in Victoria, and illustrates design and construction techniques used in the 1920s.
The Woori Yallock Bridge is of social significance as the road and bridge were funded under the Commonwealth Developmental roads programme implemented after the First World War, to open up the area for agricultural development and settlement.
The Woori Yallock Bridge is of aesthetic significance for its location in a picturesque setting, amongst old riparian woodland, in a tourist area. It contributes to this landscape setting.
