Statement of Significance
Pratt's warehouse (originally McDowall and Gray's warehouse) provides a historically significant rare example of a two-storey masonry warehouse of the 19th century in its original form with pulleys, hooks and hoists. As such, it is a typical warehouse structure of the day.
It was designed by prominent local architect, JA Doane in 1869 and is a credit to tis architect, having stood intact for over 103 years. It is interesting for being a free-standing corner structure of rough-faced masonry with a double facade. The facade is also unusual for its fake and real chimneys which were designed to provide symmetry to the Main Street side.
