Statement of Significance
A bluestone Gothic church commenced in 1854-7 to the design of Backhouse and Reynolds, with the addition of transepts in 1868 designed by Edward James. The main facade embraces a five-light lancet window, but is marred by the addition of an unsympathetic modern porch (porch excluded from classification). Adjoining (and included in the Classification) is a Chapter House of 1891-1908 intended to become the crypt of a much larger cathedral designed by Tappin, Gilbert & Dennehy, but which did not eventuate.
