Statement of Significance
The Provincial Hotel was built in 1909 to designs by Ballarat architect P S Richards. This Edwardian style hotel, built as a two storey red brick structure with elaborate cement rendered mouldings, banded arcaded loggias, corner tower and domed turrets, is derived form Art Nouveau architecture in Great Britian.
The Provincial Hotel is one of the most flamboyant, large scale examples of Edwardian style building in Victoria and an exotic illustration of Art Nouveau decoration. The hotel is an important work of noted Ballarat architect P S Richards, and is without stylistic parallel in the State. The hotel, replacing an earlier timber hotel of 1872 on the site, has an important relationship with the adjacent railway terminal and the Lydiard Street North streetscape which terminates with this corner site.
The exterior of the Provincial Hotel at Ballarat is virtually intact, although alterations to the entrances have been made. The interior has been completely refitted and few orginal elements survive intact.
