CANNUM 1 SURVEY MARKER - History
The survey tree is not illustrated on any historic maps or plans viewed as part of research conducted to date. The results of historic research carried for the broader project (i.e., Historical Heritage Assessment, Warracknabeal Energy Park; in preparation) indicates that: - The survey tree is not likely to be associated with the early pastoral period. Specifically, while located within the Warracknabeal Pastoral Run, the site/survey tree does not form part of the run’s surveyed boundary (see ‘Survey of Warracknabeal Station’ (1857)). - The survey tree is most likely associated with the 1875 Antwerp to Werrigar road survey. Specifically, the survey tree is located within a road reserve (Antwerp Road) that was first surveyed in 1975 (see attached map; DLS, 1875). [Please Note: This revised site card is being submitted primarily as a record of the site’s current condition, address and spatial location – see attached .shp file recording the site’s location and proposed extent. Historic research carried out to date was limited to: a search of historic maps and plans currently available online; and, historic research carried for the broader project (i.e., Historical Heritage Assessment, Warracknabeal Energy Park; in preparation)].CANNUM 1 SURVEY MARKER - Interpretation of Site
Probable nineteenth-century survey tree - likely associated with the 1875 Antwerp to Werrigar road survey. [Please Note: This revised site card is being submitted primarily as a record of the site’s current condition, address and spatial location – see attached .shp file recording the site’s location and proposed extent. A detailed site analysis was beyond the scope of the current project.]
Heritage Inventory Description
CANNUM 1 SURVEY MARKER - Heritage Inventory Description
Early survey mark on Black Box located in road reserve.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Medium
SiteCard data copied on 19/06/2024: Possible nineteenth-century survey tree (mature Eucalyptus sp.; black box – as per original Heritage Inventory Site Card, Weaver, 1994). At the time of the site inspection (April 18, 2024), the tree appeared to be dead, however tree trunk is in good condition (no evident rot) and the marker is well-preserved (refer to attached photos and 3D model). The survey tree comprises: - An ovate scar – carved into the south-eastern face of the tree’s trunk. The scar is located ~1.06 to ~1.58m from the current ground surface. The scar measures ~52 cm (max. length) by ~22cm (max. width) by ~7-9cm (max. depth). - A ‘survey mark’ comprising (top to bottom): a horizontal line and broad arrow (elevation benchmark); and the number ‘2’. The mark is carved into the face of the scar. [Please Note: The site inspection (April 18, 2024) was carried out as part of historical heritage survey NSV1011 for the proposed Warracknabeal Energy Park (wind farm). While located within the project area, the site is located a significant distance (>2.2km) from the proposed works area and will not be impacted. The survey report for this survey is currently in preparation and will be submitted to Heritage Victoria on completion.]
