Statement of Significance
Lal Lal Blast Furnace comprises the site and remains of the iron ore quarries and smelting works developed and operated by the Lal Lal Iron Mining Company primarily between 1873 and 1885, when the company collapsed. The remains include the stone and brick blast furnace (1880), the Cornish flue, tramway bed, mines, machinery sites, stone quarries and charchoal sites.
The Blast Furnace is "... one of the most highly significant and profoundly important remains of early industrial history in Australia. The Lal Lal Blast furnace is of importance in the industrial history of Victoria..." and is entwined with the goldmining era of nearby Ballarat. This furnace is the only blast furnace of the colonial era left standing and is the only 19th century blast furnace left standing in the Southern Hemisphere."
The Blast Furnace exists as ruins or archaelogical remains only.
Classified: 02/06/1969
