Statement of Significance
Tooronga at 258 LaTrobe Terrace, Newtown, was reputedly built in c. 1856 for John Dennis, partner in the firm of Dennis and Osborne, hay, corn and flour merchants. This two storey brick town house is constructed with a slate roof, double post decorated timber verahdah and french windows in an axial composition of unknown design origin but reflecting Regency architectural traditions.
Tooronga is an interesting early Victorian era town house, erected in the most prestigious residential area of the era 1850-80 and centred on LaTrobe Terrace. The history of this structure and its occupants remains virtually unrecorded. The design is reminiscent of Colonial Regency architecture of the 1840s. The unusually detailed decorated timber verandah and upper floor balustrade is the most distinctive feature of this building, which was used by A W Kearney as his "University School" in the 1880s.
Tooronga requires further investigation to establish the architectural origins and historical associations of this visually interesting building . The exterior is recognisably intact, the interior has not been inspected.
Of local significance.
