Statement of Significance
Gaol buildings built between 1853 and 1865 on cruciform plan standard during the last century, of which few examples remain. They include the west wing (1853) with additional third storey (1860), east wing (1855-60) with additional third storey (1866-73), south wing (kitchen and infirmary-1861), north wing (offices and accommodation and central rotunda and lantern-1864), the governor's quarters and north courtyard, north and south gateways and boundary walls with four guard towers and catwalks (1864-65). Of predominantly bluestone masonry with structural arched openings and relieving arches in larger unbroken wall areas, and interesting internal walkways of large cantilever slabs carrying ornamented cast-iron railings.
The North & South Main Gates; The Courtyard; The Governor's Residence; The Entrance (North Wing); The West Wing; The Original periphery Walls; The Four Guard Towers and Cat-walks. All buildings dating from later than 1865 are excluded.
