Statement of Significance
The pastoral property Merrang which was established in 1839 was purchased in 1856 by Scots settler, Robert Hood, who later in 1859 erected a four room stone cottage, forming the basis of the present homestead. In 1865 a substantial single storey Italianate style extension with Ionic portico was completed with the iron verandah, gatekeeper's lodge and station outbuildings being erected in 1875 to a design by Warrnambool architect Andrew Kerr.
The Merrang Homestead's picturesque gatekeeper's lodge and outbuildings form a notable early established Western District property which has evolved since 1856 under the direction of three generations of the Hood family. Merrang was famous as a Lincoln sheep stud in the 1870s. The homestead building is a pleasing Italianate composition of unknown architectural origin and one which is considerably enhanced by the unsuual Ionic portico, restrained interior decoration and cast iron verandah.
Merrang homestead and gatekeeper's lodge are well preserved and virtually intact. The woolshed has been partially destroyed by fire.
