Statement of Significance
General stores in the nineteenth century were an essential element of any country town and Purcell's Store is an important survivor of this particular building type in Victoria. The substantial brick premises date from 1887 when they were constructed for E S Purcell and Co. E S Purcell had operated a general store in Yea since the 1860's and was a notable member of the local community. The building is exceptionally intact and a fine example of nineteenth century shop premises, with its timber framed display windows and recessed shop entrances, wide timber verandah and a deep architecturally enriched parapet above featuring a pedimented name plate. The interior incorporates several original features including an arcaded partition, service counter and cellar staircase. Ithouses a wealth of merchandise divided basically into two sections including manchester and fabrics. The Purcell family owns and operates the store and holds substantial documentation of the building and the business history.
