Statement of Significance
Devilbend Reservoir is of local significance, as the largest constructed reservoir in the Mornington Peninsula Shire. The reservoir is surrounded by mainly native vegetation. The site plays an important role in the supply of water to the district, and is developing as a natural reserve, providing a safe habitat for bird and animal life.
(1) Water supply
The Devilbend Reservoir is the largest water body in the Shire of Mornington Peninsula. Constructed by the Victorian State Rivers and Water Supply Commission as part of a program of works for the Peninsula area to cater for increased demand for water. Devilbend Reservoir was opened in 1965 to supply water to the towns between Dromana and Portsea and the Western Port area. When opened it had a capacity twice the total capacity of all existing major storages in the Mornington Peninsula system. Its construction required considerable engineering skills.
(2) Flora and Fauna
140 indigenous plant species have been recorded within and adjacent to the reserve. These include a range of trees, shrubs, ground flora, aquatics, orchids and associated plant communities. Restricted public access at Devilbend has created favourable conditions for a wildlife refuge. Evidence of this is the large population of waterbirds and frogs.
(3) Social significance
During construction of the Reservoir great importance was placed on the supply of water to the district. The construction phase received many visitors and intense local media attention was given to the official opening.
(4) Aesthetic values
Aesthetically the reservoir and environs provide a pleasing view, presenting a large expanse of water with associated bird life, with surrounds of mixed vegetation.
LOCATION:
Devilbend Reservoir is located on Devilbend Creek (a tributary of Balcombe Creek), immediately downstream of Bittern Reservoir at Moorooduc South, in the Shire of Mornington Peninsula.
The reservoir is located midway between the towns of Mt Martha to the west and Hastings to the east. The nearest roads are Graydens Road to the north, Stumpy Gully Road to the east, Hodgins Road to the south and Derril Road, which follows the western boundary of the reservoir.
