Statement of Significance
Salt Marsh is a complex plant association which occurs on tidal flats. On the landward side this association is bounded by swamp tea-tree and on the seaward side by a belt of mangroves. Organic matter in the soil and development of peat increases from seaward to inshore side of the Marsh.
There is an observable tendency for vegetation zonation across the Marsh. This is associated with changes in micro-topography of the terrains and tends to run parallel to the coastline. On the flood plain of Warringine Creek this tendency is interrupted by the presence of depressions which contain water for most of the year (possibly including late summer). The pools provide a habitat for water birds.
Most Marsh plant species apparently are sensitive to slight changes in environmental factors, i.e. topography, salinity of soil and water, soil aeration, frequency of submergence in salt water, and possibly temperature gradients and fluctuations across the Marsh, depth of peat, activities of animals, birds and mud-dwelling creatures.
Where sufficiently deep water channels occur, fingers of Mangroves penetrate into the Salt Marsh; such penetration is limited by the range of tidal influence of sea water.
Mangroves are characterised by pneumatophores or "breathing roots" periodic exposure of which is essential for adequate aeration of root systems of these plants. Numerous crab holes occur among mangrove roots and for several feet into the Salt Marsh.
