Statement of Significance
This landscape includes three sites, all considered to be of considerable scientific importance and the northern area is certainly of State significance.
The special characteristics of this area are largely dependent on the vegetation communities found within them.
The two wetland communities on the southern reaches of the creek, characterised by dense thickets of Scented Paper-bark and tea-tree species have been retained unlike many other swamps that have been drained, cleared or converted into dams.
East of Macclesfield Road there is an area of approximately 4 sq. km which contains representatives of five vegetation communities with distinctly different floristic compositions. This complex and varied area contains a combination of mature swamplands, dry forests and woodlands, which is extremely rare in the Upper Yarra and Dandenong Ranges region. Much of this vegetation is considered to be of high quality with little evidence of outside disturbance. In addition, this site contains several rare and restricted species including Pointed Rice-grass (Tetrarrhena acuminata) and Heron Bristle-brush (Chorizandra cymbaria).
Zoological studies have indicated that this area provides habitat for a large number of species including populations of locally rare birds, namely Southern Emu-wren and Field Wren and one endangered species of bird, the Helmeted Honeyeater. In addition, the area supports a number of mammals including the Wombat, Black Wallaby and Brown Antechinus.
LOCATION AND BOUNDARIES:
Three areas along Macclesfield Creek are included in this Recording. The northern site adjoins the stream reserve of the southern end of the Cockatoo Creek arm of the Yellingbo State Faunal Reserve.
