Statement of Significance
It is of significance because it contains the best known stand of the rare Bellarine Yellow Gum (Eucalyptus leucoxylon subspecies bellarinensis). The subspecies is listed under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act. The property contains hundreds of mature specimens and the largest might date from before European settlement. Numerous young plants of E. leucoxylon ssp. bellarinensis and E. viminalis ssp. pryoriana are scattered across the whole site, indicating a large recruitment event in 1995 and 1996 (Carr, 1997b).
It is of significance due to the occurrence of a further 39 regionally significant plant species which have been identified in the grassy woodland on the property. Grassy woodland originally covered the elevated plain that forms the main section of the Bellarine Peninsula, and is now limited in extent to "Goandra" and the Ocean Grove Nature reserve. Small areas have also been identified in Grubb Road and beside the railway line in Drysdale. Grassy woodlands, of which "Goandra" is an excellent example, have been reduced to less than 1 percent of their former pre-European distribution in Western Victoria. In addition:
- Specimens of Drooping Sheoke on the property are considered regionally significant as woodlands containing them have been grossly depleted.
- The extensive fauna on the property includes the Bellarine Peninsula's only koala colony and is a valuable habitat for numerous species including the endangered Swift Parrot. Some threatened species of woodland birds also frequent the site.
- Goandra acts as an effective buffer and an extension of the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve, the only nature reserve on the Bellarine Peninsula
- Goandra is important as an environmental link between the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve, the Barwon River, Lake Connewarre Game Reserve and Bass Strait
- Hollow trees and logs a century or more old provide important fauna nesting sites.
