Statement of Significance
Contribution to the landscape.
This English Oak is a prominent and attractive tree in the landscape. Quercus robur is one of the most common park trees in south-eastern Australia and is noted for its vigorous, luxuriant growth. It is native to most of Europe, and to Anatolia to the Caucasus, and also to parts of North Africa
Mr Retallack purchased 3 acres in 1881 and built the large house named 'Carnbrae Two' after a castle in Cornwall. It was bought by Misses Mitchell in 1908 who then sold it to Messrs Manifold Cuthbert & Bailey for the establishment of Queens College. The site is now the Ballarat campus of the Australian Catholic University.
