Statement of Significance
The site appears to have undergone limited disturbance in the past and may contain substantial in situ structural remains and assoicated archaeological deposits.
The site is connected to the historical development of the Ballarat region. It is also possibly associated with the development of religious activities in the area and state/colony.
The site has the potential to contain substantial undisturbed sub-surface features and deposists of archaeological material.

MCCARTNEY'S HOMESTEAD - History
Initial grant of land to William McCartney on 1 August 1854; subsequent owners suggest agricultural use until 1950s when part was transferred to Ballarat Broadcasting co. May have also housed memebers of the Redemptorist Order in 1880s (undetermined).MCCARTNEY'S HOMESTEAD - Interpretation of Site
Site appears to be remains of a structure (likely domestic) and associated outbuildings and orchard. May be connected to the redemptorist order who established a monestary among this section of the road in Alfredton in the mid 1880s.

Site consists of ppossible bluestone foundations (with some worked bluestone on the surface), and associated well (filled), brick-lined pit, and evidenceof a former orchard.
