SITE OF THE FORMER MOORABOOL STREET WHARF - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Moorabool Street wharf completed in 1855. 1856 two sheds (each 120 ft x 30 ft wide) were built on it to store produce. In 1873 the wharf was strengthened and partly reconstructed, 18 ft added to make a width of 70 ft, including a roadway. Excursion steamers used the wharf. When constructed, the wharf was 380 feet long with a depth of 9 feet 5 inches. Bay trade ceased in 1938 and the wharf fell into disuse. It was demolished in 1949 by the Geelong Harbour Trust to provide more room for the berthing of large ships at Cunningham Pier. It was replaced with an ornamental sea wall along the line of the foreshore, and an inscribed tablet located on the wall.
