GOODMAN'S HUT & MATSON HOMESTEAD SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: an 1840s survey plan by Hoddle shows Goodman's Huts in the approx location of the site. The site sits on the property 'Bullengarook Park' a pastoral lease called Bullengarook' was taken out in the 1840s - Goodman was one of the leasees, prior to Henry Matson taking over the property in 1848. An 1854 (New Road) Plan shows that Matson had taken out a pre-emptive right by that time and records a large U-shaped structure with several smaller buildings. Anew homestead site was constructed in the late 1870s and a letter dated 1921 records 'The Old Homestead Paddock' with brick chimney remains & fruit trees.
GOODMAN'S HUT & MATSON HOMESTEAD SITE - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: the mounds represent the remains of brick chimney stacks, now collapsed, grassed over. The regular outlines to the west appear to be the footing of a large building. It is likely that the eastern part of the site are Goodman's hut (dating to the 1840s) and the larger structure is the homestead built by Matson in the late 1840s/early 1850s.
