RAILWAY HILL MINING SITE - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The tunnels all enter the east face of Railway Hill, and are located at the end of Park Lead. This lead was opened in January 1863. In July 1863 the Mining Surveyor reported that, "there are small runs of gold deposit, extending along the side of, and at some places crossing the railway line. The length at present opened up is nearly half a mile." In March 1888 the Mining Surveyor reported that , "There are several co-operative parties engaged in tunnelling the old ground (Railway Hill) but they have not met with ground that will give miners' wages."Heritage Inventory Description
RAILWAY HILL MINING SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
A series of four mine tunnels open into the east side of the hill, three of which have collapsed or have been filled in. The fourth remains open. Mullock heaps extend down the slope from each of these tunnels. At the north end of the site is a house site, marked by a levelled area, traces of stone walls, scattered brick and a remnant garden, including cypress and hawthorn trees.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Moderate archaeological significance (6) and moderate regional historical significance.
