OAKLANDS JUNCTION TOWNSHIP SITE - History
Very little is currently known about the Oaklands Junction settlement, which is now located within the boundaries of Melbourne Airport. Moloney (2003: 261) has described the township as a small hamlet that emerged sometime during the 19th century and continued into the 20th. It is likely that the settlement got its name from the nearby Oaklands homestead property, as did the surrounding 'Oaklands' district (Moloney 2003: 261). Early settlers in the area were attracted by the beauty of the landscape and by the 1850s agriculture and stone quarrying were common local practices (Moloney & Johnson 1998). It may be that the Oaklands Junction village served the civic and commercial needs of the surrounding rural area, or could also have developed as a stopover place en route to the goldfields.
OAKLANDS JUNCTION TOWNSHIP SITE - Interpretation of Site
The foundations of two buildings were observed during the recent survey as a combination of cropmarks and brick footings. Both are rectangular structures of one or two rooms.
The bluestone culvert and drain recorded in 1995 survives at the site. Various fragments of ceramic were noted across the site.
OAKLANDS JUNCTION TOWNSHIP SITE - Archaeological Significance
Although it would appear that the material recorded in 1995 has been cleared, or is perhaps more overgrown, this does not appear to have included large scale ground disturbance and it is likely that the site retains sub-surface deposits relating to the 19th century and early 20th century settlement at Oaklands Junction.
OAKLANDS JUNCTION TOWNSHIP SITE - Historical Significance
The site is of historical significance as that of the 19th century settlement at Oaklands Junction. It is a rare example of a village site essentially sealed by the development of Tullamarine Airport.

OAKLANDS JUNCTION TOWNSHIP SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
Bluestone culvert and drain running beneath Oaklands Road and Bulla Road approximately 50 metres north of their junction within the airport runway perimeter fence.
