Statement of Significance
'The Keep' at the rear of G Block in the Victoria Barracks was originally the central defence embrasure in a long defensive wall which formed the western boundary to the colonial military barracks complex. Erected in c.1860, this stone fortification was built of rock faced regular caused basalt with fine axed dressings, crenellated battlements and segmental arched gun loops from a design prepared in the Public Works Department.
'The Keep' at Victoria Barracks is the sole surviving remnant of a once extensive fortified wall forming the western boundary to the barracks compound. Although the fortifications were erected immediately after the 'Russian Scare' of the 1850's, the role of the keep has been symbolic rather than strategic. A more intact and extensive walled fortification is to be seen at the Queenscliff barracks erected at the same time as the Victoria Barracks defences.
'The Keep' stands isolated within the enclosure of the Victoria Barracks. The flanking walls have been demolished and the structure is unoccupied.
Classified: 26/5/1961
