Heritage Inventory History of Site: Coal mining commenced on the Eastern Area in 1915 and ceased in 1947. Now a tourist mine operated by Parks Victoria.

WONTHAGGI EASTERN AREA (NOS. 1 & 3 TUNNELS) - Heritage Inventory Description
The site contains a very disturbed mullock heap, three tunnels, two of which are open, underground workings (being a portion of the original No.1 bench), two sets of haulage machinery foundations, the concrete floor of the stables, a fire hydrant, museum records (Annex 4), the 'paint shop' from the power station site, the lamp shed and the bicycle shed from Kirrak, a tippler, parts of a picking belt and sundry other pieces of coal handling plant. There are also a number of other newer buildings and structures which have been placed on the site since it became a museum.
Heritage Inventory Significance: High cultural significance. The site is of regional significance.
