WONTHAGGI KIRRAK AREA - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The shaft was sunk in 1937 and by 1940 an extensive mining and hauling plant had been erected. The mine closed in 1946.

Heritage Inventory Interpretation: Kirrak coal mining area with an extensive range of features. Last area to be mined on the Wonthaggi field.

WONTHAGGI KIRRAK AREA - Heritage Inventory Description
The site contains foundations, flooring and footings for: a change room, toilet block, hot water stand, smithy, office, air compressor, water tank stand, engine room and substation, stables, air shaft winding machinery, the main shaft poppet head and a lamp room. In addition there is an air shaft plenum chamber and a ruinous brace building and the formation for the railway sidings.
Heritage Inventory Significance: Of moderate cultural significance. This site was the last mine on the Wonthaggi field. It has an extensive range of features, including one of the two brace buildings on the field.
