The Tunnel - Big Peninsula - Physical Description 1
A tunnel approximately 80 yards long through the narrowest point of the Big Peninsula, dug by Chinese miners during the gold rush. This extraordinary work was undertaken in order to divert the course of the Yarra to mine the large bend in the river for gold. The expectations were great but results disappointing. (Tansley, 1978)
Today the water emerges from the tunnel into a deep pool which is used as a swimming hole in summer. (Tansley, 1978)Heritage Study and Grading
