FORMER WINDERMERE POST OFFICE - History
The post office was built of bluestone and established as a small non-official post office on 1 September 1862. Mrs Anne Comber managed the Post Office between 1894-1913.FORMER WINDERMERE POST OFFICE - Archaeological Significance
The Windermere Post Office site is of high archaeological significance as it provides the opportunity to examine the remains of a commercial building of the 19th century and will improve the infomration regarding both the lifestyle and commercial aspects of inhabitants living in the area.
FORMER WINDERMERE POST OFFICE - Historical Significance
The site of the Windermere Post Office is a significant importance to the local history of Windermere. As an unofficial post office, it offers a glimpse into rural life in Windermere and the Ballarat region during the mid to late 19th century. local landonwes have indicated that the location of the post office at the corner of Blind Creek Road and windermere-Sulky Road placed the nbuilding in a very strategic and central location within the area prior to the building of the Western Highway.
FORMER WINDERMERE POST OFFICE - Interpretation of Site
The post office, not the building, was moved near to the Windermere school. Mail bags were brought to the Windermere train station where they were collected and taken to the post office. The post office was then moved closer to the Windermere Railway Station, to Mr and Mrs Tom Fletchers Store known as burrumbeet and Windermere Farmers cooperative. Mrs Fletcher and her daughter Ella were in chagre of the post office until the Fletchers retired and Mr and Mrs Jack palmer took over the dwelling.

FORMER WINDERMERE POST OFFICE - Heritage Inventory Description
Location of the former Windermere Post Office. Features present include part of what may have been a brick chimney, a small mound that may contain the foundations of the building, a cobble road (evidence of which is both on the surface and below ground), as well as bricks and bottles lying on the ground, near the foundation, and glass, brick, and ceramic found subsurface.
