POWELL'S HOMESTEAD - History
It is likely that the site contains artefacts and foundations relating to a house built around 1854 (based on local knowledge).POWELL'S HOMESTEAD - Archaeological Significance
Moderate significance due to a range of features, materials present, and the potential of occupation over generations.
POWELL'S HOMESTEAD - Historical Significance
Moderate level of historic significance due to the mid 19th century date of the house. The site is located approximately 500 metres from the ruins of the Windemere Post Office, which was built in the 1860s, and less than a kilometre from the Windemere schoolhouse. Its location is therefore relatively near to local points of activity.
POWELL'S HOMESTEAD - Interpretation of Site
Based on the landowner's information and the artefacts present, the site appears to be a homestead from the mid 19th century. The date when the building was torn down is unkonwn, but is within Mr powell's lifetime, which would be about 70 years. The mound located near the tree contains the remnants of the structure and is itself an old refuse pile. The field in which the site is located, which is now used for pasture, has been ploughed. Artefacts associated with the homestead were found combined with Aboriginal artefacts at a depth between 5-35cm, below ground surface.
Heritage Inventory Description
POWELL'S HOMESTEAD - Heritage Inventory Description
The site comprises of a small mound near a mature Eucalypt (likely a swamp gum), which has historic artefacts, including handmade bricks, ceramic, and bottle glass lying around it. It is said that a house, built sometime around 1854, once stood in the location. Artefacts similar to those noted on the surface around the tree were recovered from shovel probes dug approximately 30 metres south of the mound and tree.
