STREETS ROAD HISTORICAL COMPLEX - History
According to the original inventory:
Owned by Henry Huon in 1880s. Bought by Albury Wodonga Development Corp in the 1970s and is currently being redeveloped as a residential estate. A search of Parish Maps and other historical texts has not revealed further historical information regarding this complex.
Previous assessment by Thomson et al 2003 determined that a Consent to Destroy was required for the destruction of this feature. This was issued on 4 August 2004. (C307).
The area of Levena is located approximately 10km south of Wodonga CBD. The name is apparently derived by the reverse spelling of "AVENEL". The first school was opened in 1875 and is rural. Tobacco may have been grown in the area since 1868 by Mr. Heilman who arrived back from the American Civil War. Greater intensification in the north east of Victoria occurred with the introduction of American flu-cured varieties and was encouraged by the government. By the 1960s there was over production and the government installed a quota system.STREETS ROAD HISTORICAL COMPLEX - Archaeological Significance
This site is of local cultural significance, as one of the few examples of early 20th century pastoral activity near Wodonga.
STREETS ROAD HISTORICAL COMPLEX - Historical Significance

STREETS ROAD HISTORICAL COMPLEX - Interpretation of Site
Agricultural and pastoral property. Dairy cows and tobacco appear to be the main industry of the property in the early to mid 1900s. There has been no further information regarding the site in order to reassess this interpretation
Heritage Inventory Description
STREETS ROAD HISTORICAL COMPLEX - Heritage Inventory Description
Open paddock, visible from Streets Road, and according to the original inventory, the site of a range of archaeological including: dairy foundations, cattle ramp, former house site, mature exotic trees, rubbish dump and 4 wells (brick). Brick tobacco kiln - still structurally sound. Farm remains, such as dairy foundations and cattle ramp surrounding a former house site, located next to a creek.
Only the tobacco kiln was visible from the road and was found to be in good condition. The other features could not be inspected from the roadway due to distance. However, despite that a Consent to Damage over half (C307 4/08/2009) was issued after the original recording, satellite photography suggests that there has been no subsequent impact on the land surrounding the kiln. As is, it is unlikely that the features have been destroyed.
TOBACCO KILN, DAIRY FOUNDATIONS, CATTLE RAMP, FORMER HOUSE SITE, MATURE EXOTIC TREES, RUBBISH AND FOUR BRICK WELLS.
Brick tobacco kiln (still structurally sound) and farm remains such as dairy foundations and cattle ramp surrounding a house site located next to a creek.
Physical Conditions: TOBACCO KILN IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE REST OF THE SITE IS IN POOR CONDITION
